Albanians head to the polls amidst tension and unrest
Polling stations have opened in Albania as voters elect their municipal representatives. These elections are held at a time when the opposition has boycotted them, while the president of the country has issued a decree revoking the elections and setting a new date for them. However, the government has insisted that these elections be held today.

In the past few days, there’s been violence and unrest in many opposition run municipalities, where opposition activists have stormed regional election centers and attempted to destroy voting materials which were kept inside. Police have made many arrests, while warning those who attempt to cause acts of violence on election day that they will face imprisonment.

The head of the government, Edi Rama, has called on Albanians to head to the polls on Sunday, while the opposition leader, Lulzim Basha said that these elections must be boycotted, as they take the country back to the communist regime when there was only one party.
