Opposition in Albania asks president to dissolve parliament

President of Albania, Ilir Meta has sent a a letter to the Central Election Commission asking this institution about the number of MPs that parliament currently has. After the opposition decided to relinquish its mandates 4 months ago, candidates from the opposition lists decided to fill the vacancies, however, 18 seats are still vacant.

This move by the head of the state comes after the opposition asked the president to dissolve parliament, claiming that the fact that parliament does not have 140 MPs makes this parliament illegitimate.

Meanwhile, today, the head of the state said that the president has been elected by parliament, but “not by this parliament, but by a legitimate parliament”.

This whole debate follows the decision of the president to cancel June 30 local elections arguing that sides must engage in dialogue in order for the opposition to take part in the elections. /ibna/
